Canada’s Supply Management: Dumps Milk, Newcomers Suffer

MILK MOUNTAIN: How Ontario’s Dairy Cartel Poured 10 MILLION Litres Down the Drain While Families Can’t Afford a Carton

They poured it straight down the drain.

While Ontario families struggle to put food on the table, the dairy industry deliberately dumped 10.2 million litres of fresh, perfectly good milk in November alone.

“We haven’t bought milk in three weeks,” says Sarah Chen, a mother of two in Brampton. “My kids ask for cereal, and I have to say no. But they’re throwing it away?”

THE GREAT WASTE

Welcome to supply management, Canada’s sacred cow of agricultural policy.

The system pays farmers to produce less—and destroy anything extra.

Official figures obtained by this website reveal the staggering scale: 10.2 million litres destroyed in just 30 days.

That’s enough to fill four Olympic swimming pools. Or give every Ontario child a glass of milk for a month.

PRICE FIXING SCANDAL

Why? To keep prices artificially high at your local supermarket.

A litre of milk costs $2.65 in Ontario—nearly double the American price.

The average family pays an extra $276 per year for dairy products because of this system.

Canada imports just 3% of its dairy, blocking cheaper foreign competition with tariffs of up to 300%.

The Dairy Farmers of Ontario declined an on-camera interview. In a terse statement, they called the waste “necessary for market balance.”

FAMILIES GO HUNGRY

Food banks across the province are overwhelmed.

“This is moral bankruptcy,” declares Jennifer Kwan of Feed Ontario. “Wasting food during an affordability crisis is criminal.”

The system costs Canadian consumers an estimated $3.7 billion annually. All to protect just 3,500 dairy farmers.

Prime Minister Trudeau has called supply management “critical for food security.” Critics say it’s critical for votes in Quebec and Ontario dairy country.

The dairy lobby spent $2.3 million on political donations last year.

Next month, millions more litres will flow down Ontario drains. The checkout price will stay sky-high.

Your grocery bill is being decided by a tap—and a political donation.
