Manitoba TRRP Update: Food Services Out, Trades In
BOOTED: Manitoba Axes Hospitality Workers from Immigration Pilot as Skilled Trades Take Priority
The axe has fallen.
Starting February 4, 2026, thousands of temporary residents working in hotels, bars, and restaurants will be unceremoniously dumped from Manitoba’s Temporary Resident Retention Pilot.
The province quietly posted the bombshell changes this week, confirming that the Hospitality and Food Services sector is officially off the eligibility list for good.
But not everyone is losing out.
While waiters and kitchen hands face the chop, skilled trades workers are suddenly finding themselves at the front of the queue.
Electricians, plumbers, and carpenters are among the lucky favourites now welcomed under the revamped scheme.
The Clock Is Ticking
Immigration experts warn this is a seismic shift in Manitoba’s labour market strategy.
The changes come into force in less than two years, giving hospitality workers scant time to pivot careers or face uncertain immigration status.
Sources close to Manitoba Immigration say the move reflects urgent screaming from construction and manufacturing sectors desperate for talent.
For now, the message is brutally clear.
If you swing a hammer, Manitoba wants you.
If you serve the coffee, you might need to look elsewhere.
